When you head off to Basic Combat Training (BCT), having the right pair of running shoes can make a significant difference in your comfort and performance. While the Army does issue standard running shoes, many trainees find it beneficial to bring their own. Personally, I liked the standard issues, but many didn’t feel the same way. Often, you are allowed to wear your personal running shoes during training, provided they meet the Army’s standards. An athletic trainer usually checks to ensure your shoes are suitable for running, so it’s a smart move to invest in a quality pair that you know fits well and offers the support you need.
Many trainees find that the standard-issue running shoes don’t always meet their personal preferences or fit as comfortably as they’d like. To save space in your bag and ensure you’re ready to hit the ground running, consider wearing your newer, well-fitted running shoes when you arrive at BCT. This way, you’re not only prepared but also have one less item to pack. At the end of the day, it is the drill sergeant’s discretion on what to allow – so make sure you’re modest with your color choices. Here are some of my recommendations:
Brooks Men’s Ghost 15 Neutral Running Shoe

Brooks was a popular brand at BCT; this shoe in particular was widely used and modest in color.
ON Men’s Low-Top Sneaker

On Cloud (ON) was another popular brand and offers modest colors. This is the shoe I purchased before BCT. It has some bounce, but not too much.
Under Armour Men’s Surge 3 Running Shoe

Under Armour is certainly a less expensive option, and was widely used. In my opinion, though, it’s not the same quality.
Bringing your own shoes to BCT is a wise move, just in case the standard options don’t suit you. It’s also important to note that you can also order shoes online; in the worst case scenario the drill sergeants put the shoes in your personal bag and you use them another time.
