Taking care of your feet during Basic Combat Training (BCT) is critical to staying healthy and avoiding unnecessary injuries. While having the right running shoes is essential, proper foot care goes beyond footwear. Here are some essential foot care tips to keep your feet in top shape during BCT.

1. Choose the Right Socks  

Wearing the right socks is just as important as wearing the right shoes. Opt for moisture-wicking, cushioned socks that help prevent blisters and keep your feet dry. Avoid cotton socks, as they can hold moisture and increase the risk of blisters. The standard issue socks aren’t terrible. Make sure if you bring some of your own they are black and calf length. 2. Keep Your Feet Dry  

Moisture can lead to blisters, fungal infections, and other foot issues. Change your socks regularly, especially after strenuous activity, and make sure to dry your feet thoroughly after showers.

3. Use Foot Powder or Antifungal Spray 

Applying foot powder or antifungal spray can help keep your feet dry and prevent infections. Use these products in your shoes and on your feet daily to reduce moisture buildup. When I went to BCT the drills gave this out for free in the first couple weeks.

4. Trim Your Toenails Properly  

Long toenails can cause discomfort, especially during long runs or marches. Trim your toenails straight across to avoid ingrown toenails and reduce the risk of irritation. Toenail clippers are something you’re required to buy in a mandatory kit from the PX store, so I won’t link one here. If you do bring your own toenail clipper, make sure it does not have a file.

5. Treat Blisters Immediately  

If you do develop a blister, treat it immediately to prevent it from worsening. Clean the area, apply an antiseptic, and cover it with a blister pad or moleskin to protect it during training. I went through 2-3 rolls of blister tape, here is one brand that does the job well enough:
