For many new soldiers, a cross necklace is more than jewelry. it’s a symbol of faith, comfort, and identity. But when you’re preparing for Basic Combat Training (BCT), it’s natural to wonder whether you can bring it, whether it’s allowed, and whether it will survive the chaos of training. Here’s what you can actually expect.

Yes, You Can Wear a Cross…With a Few Rules and Things to Keep in Mind

Army regulations (AR 670-1) allow soldiers to wear religious items, including crosses, crucifixes, or saint medals. The guidelines are simple:

  • It must be neat and conservative
  • It must be worn under the uniform
  • It must not interfere with training or safety

As long as the chain is thin and the cross stays tucked in, most drill sergeants won’t comment on it at all. Many soldiers quietly wear crosses every day of BCT without issue.

If you attend BCT and you do not bring one, there are vendors that come to the training area, but there prices are WAY marked up. You can expect to pay $50+ for a stainless steel cross necklace. Not only is this overpriced, but the necklace could be lost during training.

Definitely consider bringing one with you. A drill sergeant will not make you get rid of one if it is AR 670-1 compliant.

If you prefer a more patriotic look, this is a strong option:
